Black out, Greene out, down and out

Half-baked idea, at best. This just sounds like cheese dictated through someone who worries about “team first.” I can see that, but c’mon, “Greene out” is a fun, harmless idea. I give the team credit. I think its ego is healthy enough to handle this.

UI DECLARES GAME AGAINST NATIONALLY RANKED

PENN STATE A “BLACKOUT” EVENT…WITH AN ASTERISK

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The UI Athletics Department has officially declared the Iowa football team’s game Saturday against nationally ranked Penn State a “Blackout” event…with an asterisk:  The UI is inviting UI students to follow the lead of their student peers and “Greeneout” the student section of historic Kinnick Stadium.

“It will require a total team effort to have success Saturday against what is clearly one of the nation’s very best college football teams.  I can’t wait to see Kinnick alive and electric, our fans fully engaged, loud and proud and respectful, and, this week, dressed in black to show their support for the Hawkeyes,” said Gary Barta, the UI’s director of athletics.

“I’m excited to see our student body getting behind one of their fellow students in their support for Shonn. Their creativity, resourcefulness, and energy will add a little extra color and, more importantly, energy and excitement to an already incredible atmosphere,” Barta added.

The Nittany Lions are unbeaten in their first nine games of 2008, sit alone atop the Big Ten Conference standings, and are currently ranked third in the most recent Bowl Championship Series poll. They will be the highest ranked team to play in Kinnick Stadium since the 2006 season when Ohio State visited Iowa City as the nation’s top ranked team.

Saturday’s game is sold out (70,585), but a limited number of tickets remain for Iowa’s home finale, next week (Nov. 15th, 11 a.m.), against Purdue.

  1. This makes no sense to me. While I’ve never liked the idea of a “green-out”, it’s clearly grown some momentum. Why does the Athletics Dept try to neuter it now? If they wanted a blackout, they should have announced it a few weeks ago when the green-out idea got out there.

  2. Yeah, the lateness is weak. Very weak.

    Holy crossed signals, Batman.

  3. I’ll never forget the first blackout they did against Michigan a few years ago. I got to the game late due to airport problems and walked in midway through the 2nd quarter. The stadium was full at that point and it was quite disorienting with that much black.

I can only image how it will be if when the lights are coming on Saturday.

  4. The first blackout was terrific. Was it ISU this year, with all the rain? That didn’t work.

  5. I think this is a good thing…….keep the green to one section.

I was at that Michigan black out game…..black attire felt appropriate walking out of the stadium after the loss.

  6. Marc,
You’re aware that this was first spoken of on an Iowa message board 3 weeks ago, right? The UI sports marketing dept. didn’t just come up with this idea on it’s own. It would be nice if someone gave credit where it’s due, and at least acknowledged that it wasn’t their idea.

  7. Doug,

What are you talking about? The “Greene out” or the “Black out”? I put the Greene out thingie up here about three weeks ago, if that’s what you’re talking about.

The “Black out” was new to me today, at least the UI-sanctioned version of it. Was it on a messageboard three weeks ago? I didn’t see that.

  8. Jebus, I think I strained my keyboard not using that reference that day. I thought it was too obvious. In retrospect, I out-thought myself. It was dead on (pun intended).

Black, gold, green, pick a color.

  9. Marc,
Sorry for not clarifying. The “Greene Out” was first mentioned on hawkeyereport.com a day or 2 after the Wisconsin game. A lot of people didn’t like it, for various reasons, but eventually word spread. The Daily Iowan ran a story about it, KCCI did something on it about 1 1/2 weeks ago, and, and now it seems like UI has finally heard about it and is trying to pass it off as theirs.

  10. Point taken, Doug. I didn’t see it on HawkeyeReport. The first place I saw was in a e-mail from a guy from Waterloo.

You’re right, the UI should acknowledge the Greene Out started as a student grassroots thingie. Hope it works out.

I think if nothing else, it shows how hungry fans were for a player like Greene.
